Gunner’s Ridge Campground

Glendive, MT

Project Overview

The Gunner’s Ridge Campground project is a campground development that reimagines a former shooting range into a vibrant, accessible recreational destination within Makoshika State Park, Montana’s largest and most iconic state park. Located in the rugged and striking badlands of Glendive, Montana, this new campground not only enhances the park’s appeal by expanding its outdoor offerings but also responds to a regional need for more, updated camping facilities and fosters tourism while preserving the park’s natural beauty and unique fossil-rich landscape.

The design of Gunner’s Ridge was driven by a desire to increase access to outdoor activities, provide more camping opportunities, and offer enhanced recreational amenities. The new campground features a series of well-planned, accessible campsites, a family-friendly playground, and a strategically located trailhead that links visitors to the park’s extensive network of trails. These improvements allow a broader
range of visitors, from young families to seasoned outdoor enthusiasts, to experience the beauty of Makoshika in a more accessible and enjoyable way.

The project represents a significant leap forward in the park’s commitment to tourism. The site’s transformation was executed with great care to minimize environmental and cultural impact, utilizing careful site planning to limit the project’s disturbance to the surrounding habitat and cultural resources. The addition of trails and campsites was designed to protect sensitive areas while maximizing the visitor experience. Special attention was paid to preserving the area’s distinctive geological features, including its fossil beds, which are integral to the park’s identity and attract visitors from around the world.

Led by the entrant’s team, the site planning and design process involved close collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including state park officials, environmental and cultural specialists, and local community members. This collaborative effort ensured that the project not only met recreational needs but also aligned with the long-term preservation goals for Makoshika State Park. The result is a modern, multi-use space
that promotes outdoor recreation and education.

The Gunner’s Ridge Campground will be a key asset for Makoshika State Park and the Glendive area, significantly expanding the park’s capacity to accommodate visitors, support regional tourism, and protect the rich natural and cultural heritage of the area. With its combination of accessibility, recreation, and environmental stewardship, the campground is poised to become a cornerstone of Montana’s outdoor tourism scene for years to come.
